From the storage area to the hood

Systems for material supply are the heart of the paint shop

Blood must circulate for the body to function, and the human heart makes this possible. In a similar way, material supply systems are the heart of the paint shop, ensuring everything runs smoothly. Achieving the perfect paint job requires these systems to consider numerous parameters.

Material supply essentially consists of several key areas: paint storage, preparation zones, supply and waste disposal systems, piping racks, and optional paint tempering systems. Paint storage capacities range from 25-liter hobbocks to 1,000-liter containers, which hold several days’ worth of paint and purging agents. For larger quantities, fresh and used purging agents are often stored in tanks of up to 25,000 liters. Meanwhile, the paint supply room is equipped with preparation zones to ready paints for use in the supply systems. This area includes cleaning stations, agitators and equipment for handling primers, base coats and clear coats, hardeners and solvents. Paint is then circulated through piping systems that run in large ring loops around the spray booths, ensuring it is always ready for application. Additionally, optional tempering systems play a crucial role in maintaining paint within a precise temperature range to keep application ready. All of this is crucial for the perfect paint job.

Key components of material supply

Containers
The paint is delivered in large containers and transferred into stainless steel containers developed by Dürr. These containers can be double-walled for tempering the paint material and include process connections, sensors for level measurement, and agitators to prevent the paint material from settling, ensuring consistent quality.

Pumps
The paint is moved through the system using specialized paint pumps designed to minimize shear stress. Dürr's EcoPump series is specially developed to meet the diverse requirements of the industry — electric, horizontal pumps operate by compressed air and are available in three different sizes ensuring the right pump for every application.

Filters
Special filters are essential for achieving optimal coating quality. Dürr provides filters for use in both the supply and return lines, tailored for various industrial applications.

Controllers
Dürr's EcoFlow series controllers regulate supply line pressure for application robots ensuring optimal performance. Featuring a high flow rate extensive control range, they are integral to supply systems. Additionally, a pneumatic version is available, allowing pressure to be adjusted as needed to safeguard paint quality while operating in efficiency mode - all within a highly dynamic system.

These four key components of the paint supply systems are either manufactured by Dürr or developed in collaboration with specialist suppliers and produced exclusively for Dürr. What is the advantage? This approach enables the creation of paint supply systems that meet the stringent demands of painting technology. As a result, Dürr is able to design and implement tailor-made and custom-built solutions to meet specific customer needs.

We place great importance on using components specially developed for painting technology, as they have a major influence on the paint quality and therefore on the result of the paint job.

What's the secret behind the perfect paint job?

Achieving the perfect paint job starts with addressing paint application requirements early in the material supply stage. System parameters such as pressure, volume flow, flow speeds and temperature must be precise to ensure the paint has the correct consistency. Dürr ensures its systems are designed to handle paint with exceptional care, minimizing shear stress during delivery. Additionally, the supply systems are designed to reduce dead space as much as possible. For example, specialized fittings and ball valves are used to eliminate areas of stagnation where paint can settle. This prevents issues such as unregulated detachment of settled paint, which in the worst case could result in defects in the final coating.

The complexity of material supply

Achieving the ideal material supply system requires careful consideration of numerous factors early in the planning stage – ranging from the selection of individual parts to external influences. This process begins with compliance with legal regulations, such as machinery directives, the Water Resources Act and ATEX equipment directives. Moreover, regulations vary by country and region, requiring different solutions. Customer-specific circumstances and the integration of material supply with other production areas are also critical, as the system spans the entire paint shop and must align seamlessly with all its operations. Dürr further considers individual customer requirements, including processes, available space, budget, and timelines, to deliver a fully customized solution.

Flexible solutions for every need

From standardized paint supply systems, which Dürr provides as technically refined and well-designed products with numerous, cost-effective options, to specialized solutions, Dürr ensures flexibility when customization is required. For customers with unique material supply needs, Dürr offers tailored solutions to meet those specific requirements. Ring pipe systems are particularly efficient when only a few colors are used repeatedly, as they enable color changes with minimal paint loss and purging agent consumption. With the increasing variety of colors used in the automotive industry, particularly for utility vehicles and plastic parts, it’s no longer uncommon to use over 100 different colors. Frequent color changes require flexible, specialized paint systems, such as Dürr's EcoSupply P. This standardized, modular paint supply system with pigging technology can be used for both water-based and solvent-based paint applications. The increasing variety of colors is not only due to special colors applied using pigging systems but also because of colors needed for small batches or standard colors used less frequently. EcoSupply P helps reduce paint loss and purging agent consumption while supporting very short color change times in the supply systems.

Environmentally friendly and efficient

Dürr always implements its material supply systems with energy-efficiency and low-maintenance in mind, both from a process and economic perspective. This includes material-friendly paint delivery to ensure a long paint shelf life and a perfect paint job. The company also focuses on a key aspect of sustainability: reducing energy consumption. By controlling paint supply systems according to requirements, energy savings of up to 85% over conventional paint supply systems are possible. A real-world example: for vehicles, a variety of colors are available in the color changer. When certain colors are not required, the paint supply system can reduce volume flow and delivery pressure, leading to significant energy savings. Regardless of whether the energy comes from compressed air or electrical sources, the system optimizes usage based on demand, ensuring efficiency regardless of the energy source.

Dürr offers the full package

Dürr offers its customers comprehensive service, from well-designed paint delivery and paint application concepts to complete visual representation in 3D project models, as well as installation and commissioning. To keep the installation time on-site to an absolute minimum, Dürr sets up the individual systems for all large paint supply systems in advance at its sites in Bietigheim-Bissingen, Querétaro (Mexico), and Shanghai (China). The pre-installed supply and waste disposal systems are then delivered to the customer, the piping systems are connected and the system is put into operation.

We can always offer the right material supply system solution, no matter the wish or requirement.
