The new product line, named “X.Cellify”, showcases Dürr's advanced engineering and integration expertise in implementing cell manufacturing systems, as well as the company's innovative capabilities.
Dürr offers two technological approaches to conventional wet coating of electrodes: sequential tandem coating, in which one side of the foil is coated after the other, and simultaneous coating, in which both sides are coated at the same time. The latter approach is more efficient and reduces scrap rates.
Drying is an essential part of the wet coating process. X.Cellify's dryer solutions are based on over 100 patents for flotation and roller-assisted dryers, offering flexible heat sources and air recirculation control. These features prevents surface damage, maximize energy efficiency, and ensures the electrodes are evenly dried with minimal residual moisture. It also prevents the film edges from becoming wavy and the development of different temperature zones. During the drying process, battery manufacturers can use laser dryers that operate at 50% faster web speeds while drying in an energy-efficient manner.
After drying, the electrode coating is compacted using calenders. X.Cellify calenders are designed for precision and efficiency. Their dynamic gap control enables a high level of precision, ±0.5 µm, which significantly reducinges the reject rate. X.Cellify calenders have a compact design and offer a pressure force of 80 to 400 tons.
The X.Cellify product line also includes systems for solvent recovery and distillation, including a multi-stage pollutant control system and a solvent recovery system with air recirculation. These systems allow us to recover nearly all of the solvent and reuse more than 95% of it in the process. The result is the lowest possible emissions, compliance with the most stringent regulations, and a payback period of less than one year.
In addition to wet coating, Dürr offers dry coating for electrodes. Rather than using a conventional coating paste, the dry-mixed active material is compressed and laminated onto both sides of the collector foil. This technology has far-reaching consequences for a plant's overall layout because: dryers and solvent treatment are unnecessary. In combination with GROB's innovations, including a space-saving, Z-folding machine, the total area required for an entire battery production can be reduced by half.
Dürr's precise, high-pressure electrolyte filling process enables battery cells to be filled in a single step, eliminating residual gas. Unlike the conventional process, the electrolyte is filled directly into the cells at pressures of up to 30 bars. This filling pressure is two to three times higher than the current industry standard. The process design enables precise dosing and shortens the filling process as well as the subsequent penetration of the electrolyte into the active material.
The various solutions offered by X.Cellify are perfectly compatible with each other and set new standards in terms of quality and performance.
