AI in the paint shop

More efficiency with artificial intelligence (AI)

In automotive painting, some quality defects can be quickly traced back to their cause, while others often remain hidden for months. To find and identify them, machine and plant manufacturer Dürr has developed an AI solution that takes paint shops to a new level of efficiency.

Currently, very few paint shops in the automotive industry are using AI. If Alexander Haiber, Product Manager for digital solutions at machinery and plant manufacturer Dürr, has his way, this will soon change.

AI solutions will no longer be an optional feature in the future. Only those who use AI in their paint shops will be able to stand out from the competition in terms of sustainability and efficiency.

The DXQanalyze software solution developed by Dürr enables end-to-end data generation and networking at machine and plant level. The result: insights into the system that were previously impossible.

Collect, analyze, predict

DXQanalyze consists of two products. DXQequipment.analytics collects available data such as process and workpiece information at shop floor level and evaluates it. This enables potential quality defects on workpieces and imminent wear on system components to be identified at the point of origin and suitable measures to be derived. In addition, large volumes of data, including historical data, can be combined with machine learning in order to make accurate forecasts on an ongoing basis. At a higher level, DXQplant.analytics evaluates the data and the documented workpiece quality and allows conclusions to be drawn about the operation of individual process steps along the entire value chain.

Using machine learning, patterns can be recognized from the correlation of workpiece quality and process operation.

In terms of AI, this allows the implementation of end-to-end data pipelines from high-resolution machine data to plant-wide production data, enabling a holistic analytics approach for paint shops.

New level of efficiency in the paint shop

DXQanalyze has been able to improve key production figures such as the first-run rate or second-run rate for several customers, thereby reducing the consumption of resources (e.g. materials or energy) in the long term. By using AI, systematic errors in the painting process are detected for the first time. These defects would have gone unnoticed for several months in a conventional quality inspection. The result: errors are reduced early on in production with greater process transparency.

"Looking to the future, we see DXQanalyze as software that knows the paint shop better than anyone else," summarizes Alexander. "It will rapidly drive the development towards a smart, predictive and adaptive production environment."
